Ammar is a Uyghur photographer born and raised in Eastern Turkistan, currently residing in Sydney after immigrating in their teenage years. Ammar’s photographic work expands from fashion, landscapes, and travel to conceptual storytelling. They work closely with people who are part of the LGBTQ+ communities, as well as people of color, exploring identity and solidarity. Their passion in photographic medium as an art form was initially ignited by their love for cinema, later fueled by the urge to explore their surrounding as a queer Uyghur person of color whose voice has never been represented before.
In the past couple of years, Ammar has participated in few groups shows in Sydney such as “Diaspora” held at the Good Space Gallery 2018, “Altered” shown at Hazelhurst Gallery and Arts Centre 2019, as well as “Exodus” at Thirning Villa Refugee Art Project 2019. They are also currently working on a show commissioned by Fairfield Gallery and Museum to document Uyghur communities living in western Sydney region. Ammar has recently started actively getting involved in events that concerns Uyghur community, to help create more representation and tell the history and stories of a culture that is being oppressed and facing eradication. When they are not working on portraits, they like to explore the subtler elements in their surroundings that reconnects the human experience and nature in our increasingly consumerist society.
